Rochester’s City School Superintendent says the federal government has fallen short on meeting the needs of kids in special education.
Bolgen Vargas says he’s sharing his concerns with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as part of a nationwide conference call.
Vargas says he’s asking for flexibility with special education adding, the district is not receiving the support it needs from the federal government when it comes to resources, "We have some children that are have multiple challenges and therefore require year-round education, it requires more resources to be devoted to meeting their needs."
Vargas joined other superintendents from across the country on Tuesday's call with Duncan.
He says all the school chiefs involved in the dialogue are ones who have collaborated with teachers unions to move the educational reform agenda forward.
Vargas, School Board President Malik Evans, and teachers union President Adam Urbanski will meet with Arne Duncan later this month.
They’re participating in a Labor & Management conference where they’ll share how together they were able to agree on a teacher evaluation system for the District.
