A monthly index that looks at employment levels among small businesses fell back a bit in June, although the CEO of Paychex, which puts out the survey, says overall there are still some positive signs about the economy.
Marty Mucci says in recent months, this survey has shown growth in small business jobs compared to several months ago.
“The Paychex Small Business Index…has been over 101 for the whole six months, and that’s still greater than the previous six months, so we’re feeling like it’s continued, moderate growth in jobs.”
Mucci does say the Western states have shown stronger growth than the East, including New York State.
“The West is still growing stronger than the East, the mountain region in particular. I think they fell a little harder during the recession, housing prices and so forth, so they’re coming back a little bit faster than the east, and they’re also seeing jobs like high tech jobs pulling them along, where the east really hasn’t seen that kind of job growth.”
The index is based on data from about 350,000 small businesses.
