Data from the Monroe County public health department on Friday showed the county went a second straight day with no reported deaths from COVID-19.
It’s the first time since March that the county has gone two days without a reported death from the disease -- although the day that the county receives a report of a death is often different than the day the death actually occurred.
At the same time, the number of people in hospitals for COVID-19 treatment in the county has been dropping, and is now at its lowest point since May 20.
Local hospital officials said these are promising signs, but they’re still concerned about the novel coronavirus spreading as the Finger Lakes region continues to reopen.
Deaths and hospitalizations are delayed indicators of an outbreak -- they come sometimes weeks after an infection occurs.
Test results are more immediate indicators, so a spokesperson for the county health department said officials there are closely watching those numbers.
So far, the health department said, the total number of tests being run in Monroe County has increased, but the number of positive results has largely held steady, and that’s contributing to the decision that it’s likely safe to start reopening some parks and playgrounds.
