People older than 60 are 97% of Monroe County COVID-19 deaths

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

On Tuesday, the Monroe County Health Department reported four more deaths from COVID-19, bringing the local death toll to 112.

Out of that total, only three were people under 60 years old.

The over-60 age group accounts for 97% of COVID-19 deaths in Monroe County and 84%statewide.

Still, younger people continue to test positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. The county reported 13 new confirmed cases in people under 30 years old on Tuesday, including one boy under the age of 10.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 continued to hover around 100, rising slightly to 102 in the latest data from the county.

With 22 of those hospitalized on a ventilator, the burden on the local health care system has stabilized, at least temporarily, at a rate that hospitals can handle.

As the load on hospitals plateaus, the state has begun to lay out plans for resuming elective procedures and reopening other parts of the economy.

Still, a surge in local coronavirus cases remains a possibility, local and state officials said. Continued distancing and more widespread testing will be the keys to preventing it, they said.
