One new death from COVID-19 in Monroe County as number of recovered patients passes 500

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Monroe County public health department confirmed another death from COVID-19, bringing the county’s total known death toll to 57 as of Wednesday afternoon.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment held steady at 97 for the fourth straight day, according to the county’s data. Of those hospitalized, 35 were on a ventilator in an intensive care unit, the county said.

Limited testing supplies meant the county was still not testing everyone with COVID-19 symptoms, though the University of Rochester Medical Center’s pathology laboratory has started testing some nursing home residents who do not show symptoms of the disease.

A total of 883 cases of the novel coronavirus have been confirmed in the county.

More than 500 people have recovered from the virus after either testing positive or being presumed positive based on their symptoms and contact with an infected person.

Those people are no longer in isolation, though county public health commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza has said it’s not clear what degree of immunity a person gains after fighting off the virus.

Mendoza encouraged everyone in the county to stay home as much as possible and avoid close contact with other people, even if they have no symptoms.
