Coming up on Connections: Tuesday, December 8th

PBS

First hour: When to start talking to kids about sex

Second hour: Monthly Science Roundtable goes to RMSC

Talking to your kids about sex -- does it work? Does it lead to them delaying the first time, or doing it safely? A new wide-ranging analysis finds the answer is yes -- in some cases. We'll take a look at which parent tends to have more success, and which gender of child is more likely to listen. And we'll discuss when parents and schools ought to be bringing up sex. After all, in the Netherlands, the process begins in kindergarten! In studio:

  • Shellie Yussman, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of adolescent medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center
  • Kim Urbach, N.P., assistant professor at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, and director of health centers at East High School and Frederick Douglass Campus

Then it's our Monthly Science Roundtable, and we're heading out to the Rochester Museum and Science Center. We'll explore the physics of photovoltaics, the electrical signals that drive our brains, and the science of frogs. Yes, frogs: there's so much to learn from a species that is able to adapt to so many environments, from sure-footed tree frogs, to Argentinian horned frogs, to jewel-toned poison dart frogs. Our guests:

  • Dan Menelly, chief program officer for science and technology, RMSC
  • John O’Donnell, M.S., Ph.D. candidate, University of Rochester Medical Center
  • Stephen Polly, Ph.D., Rochester Institute of Technology
