Landmark Tower Faces Implosion
BUFFALO (AP) A hospital that has been a Buffalo landmark for more than a century will be imploded this weekend to make way for new development.
Mayor Byron Brown says the former Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital's 11-story tower is scheduled to be imploded at 7 a.m. Saturday. If there's inclement weather, the implosion will be rescheduled for Sunday morning.
Police will start closing streets around the hospital at 3 a.m. Saturday, with a complete traffic restriction to the area starting at 6 a.m.
People are being advised to watch the implosion at home on television, but a public viewing area will be set up nearby.
The hospital has been a fixture at Gates Circle since the early 20th century. Closed three years ago, it's being demolished to make room for a mixed-use development project.
