Schumer Announces Campaign to Rename Post Office in Fallen Officer's Honor

Senator Schumer came to Rochester and met with the family of the late Officer Daryl Pierson. The Senator, along with widow Amy Pierson and other members of the family and supporters from the community, announced an effort to have the East Rochester Post Office renamed in the officer's honor.

"Doing so would be a fitting tribute to his service and sacrifice, and would create a lasting reminder of his legacy."

Schumer says he is introducing legislation to make the name change official, and says he thinks it will have bipartisan support.

"He was a hero when he served his country in the Army and did tours in Afghanistan and Korea. He was a hero to his hometown when he came home and honored his lifelong commitment by joining the National Guard. He was a hero to the people of Rochester everyday as he made the streets safe."

Schumer says Officer Pierson was, of course, the biggest hero to his wife, Amy, and children, Christian and Charity. Amy says that even though the memory of her husband's death is painful, the reminder of his legacy in this way would be an honor.

"I was telling our five-year-old, Christian, what was happening and he couldn't imagine that a building was being named after Daddy. So it'll be a way as a mom that I can take him somewhere - somewhere else, I guess, because there's a few places in town -- you know, this is a sign that Daddy was a hero and you can live as a hero, too."
