The YMCA of Greater Rochester is celebrating the largest single capital donation in the organization’s 164 year history.

Peter and Susan Schottland of Pittsford have donated $3.5 million  to support the construction of the new Y at Jefferson Road and Clover Street.

The Schottland family have been members of the YMCA for more than 30 years.

YMCA of Greater Rochester CEO George Romell says this new Y is much more than a “gym and a swim.”

He says it will have family medical practice and OBGYN Center, a community wing with a senior center, a separate licensed day care center, and an EYM Center, or “Experience Your Mind” Center.

“This is a Y that has taken its standard ‘gym and swim and wellness and fitness rooms and just taken it to a higher level,” he said.

Romell says this donation will go a long way to help the organization reach its goal of financing 50 percent of this project through philanthropy.

“I think their gift will help spur additional philanthropy, and they are very vocal supporters about what this project will be for this community,” he said.

The YMCA’s new Schottland Family Branch is scheduled to open in October, 2019.

It will be one of the largest in the United States and serve the entire region, including Pittsford, Mendon, Brighton and Henrietta.
