The Newly-Elected Libyan Prime Minister Has Local Ties

A former RIT professor is the new Prime Minister of Libya.

The country’s parliament elected Abushagur Wednesday in a close election with Libya’s interim prime minister. Harvey Palmer, who worked closely with Abushagur, is the dean of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering at RIT. He says Abushagur demonstrated strong leadership skills during his time at the college.

"So as I see him now launching this new career as prime minister - taking on that leadership role,"Palmer says.  "I see him thinking very deeply about the people, what's in the best interest of the country. It'll  never be about him. It'll be about the people."

Abushagur joined RIT as a electrical engineering professor in 2002. He then became president of RIT’s Dubai campus six years later.
