Missing child and his father found in Virginia

Ontario County Sheriff’s Office

The search for a missing 16-month old boy and his 36-year old father is over.

Leroy Newswanger and his son Glenn were last seen in Penn Yan on Thursday, and there were concerns from authorities that Newswanger, who has an extensive mental health history, had an issue with the federal government and was headed there.

Newswanger was found at the Sentara Regional Health Center Virginia, according to Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero.

"He was requesting medications because he had left his medications in New York State, and he was asking for a medical exam of his 16 month old son due to an infection," he said.

Povero says medical staff became suspicious of Newswanger's behavior and after an online search found a picture of Newswanger and his son posted on a local television station's website.

The phone number for the Ontario County Sheriff's Office was posted on the online flyer and the medical staff called authorities here.

Newswanger is being detained for a medical evaluation and Child Protective Services has his son and are arranging his return to New York.

Newswanger is a Menonnite and has nine children, with 16-month old Glenn the youngest.

Police say the toddler has hand, foot and mouth disease with blisters around his mouth.

Povero earlier said that there is no history of any domestic violence by Newswanger against the child.

Authorities are investigating whether any charges are warranted.

Povero says what happens going forward is going to largely depend upon what information is gathered in Virginia.
