Honeoye Falls-Lima now in Urban-Suburban program

The Honeoye Falls-Lima School District is welcoming new students from the city of Rochester as it participates in the Urban-Suburban program for the first time.

Under the program, a few students from the Rochester City School District will be attending classes at HF-L.

Superintendent Gene Mancuso says it provides multiple opportunities for the district.

"We're hoping that it broadens the educational experience for all of our students, by increasing diversity, even if just by a little bit.  Giving prospective families a chance to recognize that HF-L is open and inclusive and we support diversity," he said.

Mancuso says this won't solve the regional urban problems or the Honeoye Falls-Lima diversity issue, but it's a start.

"As we've looked at the changing demographics of our country, we've sort of stayed stagnant.  We haven't really moved from that 95 percent white group, ever, for years and years and years,"  he said.

He says he believes they can continue and expand this program in the future, but it also needs to be beneficial for the district and its taxpayers, as well.

Sixteen area districts participate in the program, and there is one notable exception:  the Greece Central School District, the largest suburban district in the Rochester area.
