Council Passes 'Ban the Box' Legislation

Michelle Faust

Overwhelmingly, Rochesterians at the “Speak to Council” session came out to support legislation that was ultimately passed at the City Council Meeting Tuesday night.

All nine members of council voted to be the third city in New York State to adopt so-called ‘Ban the Box’ rules.

After the legislation is signed by Mayor Lovely Warren, employers in the city will be barred from asking about the criminal history of a job applicant until they’re granted an interview.

The legislation’s sponsor, Councilman Adam Mc Fadden, was grateful and proud of the work that went into getting the ordinance passed in Rochester.

Before the vote, McFadden read a letter of support written by University of Rochester President Joe Seligman. The letter indicated the city’s largest employer would adopt the new policy.

“They want to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity at an interview. So, I think that said something about their vision and leadership for our community, as well.”

Rochester is the third city in the state, and one of more than 60 nationwide, with similar ‘Ban the Box’ rules.
