City Council vote could bring Midtown Monorail out of storage

Parts of the former Midtown Plaza Monorail might be coming out of storage soon, if passed by a city council vote Tuesday night.

The City of Rochester has been housing the monorail since it was discontinued about a decade ago.

Trustee for the New York Museum of Transportation, Jim Dierks says they’ve already started to plan for an exhibit, hoping the proposal passes that lets them house two of the train cars.

Dierks says they would be a great addition to the museum.

"It’s transportation, that’s what we're in to. We have trucks and trains and trolleys and all sorts of land transportation and this is just one more."

He remembered seeing the monorail and the plaza back when both were bustling.

"I remember, gosh, the plaza was just alive with people and the holiday celebrations were a big part of coming downtown."

The exhibit would be about 60 feet long, and suspended at eye level, Dierks says. The cars wouldn’t be for riding, but they would be hung as they were in Midtown.

Dierks says if it’s approved, they hope to have the exhibit up in time for Christmas.
