A change in a local Marine Reserve unit may cause complications for a well-known toy distribution program later this year.
The Marine Reserve unit that was based at a facility on Paul Road in Chili was recently dissolved. That's because of an overall review of the duties carried out by the Marine Corps. The 75 or so reservists who were based there must now travel to Syracuse or Buffalo to complete their service obligations.
A complicating factor could be what happens with the Toys for Tots program, which depends on help from Marine Reservists to help collect the toys for less fortunate kids during Christmas time.
Mike Chaba, a retired Marine, heads up a local organization that helps Marine reservists.
He says Toys for Tots involves dozens of drop-off locations around the area.
"Predominantly, Toys for Tots has always been run by the reserve unit in Rochester, and obviously without them there, in order for the Toys for Tots unit to continue, we will need to put together a plan."
Chaba says anyone who wants to volunteer to help out with Toys for Tots can go online and contact the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Rochester.
