Breast Cancer Walk Celebrates and Remembers

Caitlin Whyte / WXXI News

Thousands showed up decked out in pink to the 21st annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk outside Frontier Field.

Amongst those were "Laps for Lisa," a group who were walking to support Lisa Mietelski, a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed last fall.

She attended the walk as a way to honor those who helped her.

"Give them the support back that they gave to me. It was such tremendous support for me so I just want to give back."

Michael Chrisona, Senior Marketing Manager for the American Cancer Society in Rochester hopes the event creates a day of positivity for those who have been impacted by this disease.

"Cancer has a one degree separation. We want this event to be a platform for the community of Rochester to come together, share their stories, celebrate survivorship."

Many also walked in remembrance. Julie Brooks and her family were walking for her aunt.

“Diane Jewel. She was diagnosed 5 years ago and this past year she passed away. So we've been here every year since, every year our team has grown. She always just wanted to raise as much money as she possibly could to end breast cancer, so we're just helping achieve her goal by continuing her fight."

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women.
