American Packaging breaks ground on new plant in Chili

Ground has been broken for a new manufacturing facility to be used by American Packaging in Monroe County.

Governor Cuomo says the project will lead to the creation of more than 260 jobs over the next five years as well as help ensure that the current 170 employees there are retained. He says the project will also create 100 construction jobs.

The state had announced last fall that the company had been ready to build its new plant near its facilities in Iowa but decided to expand in the Town of Chili with the help of more than $14 million in performance based incentives from Empire State Development.

That includes $7.7 million in Upstate Revitalization Initiative grants and $7 million in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits.  Monroe County also offered tax benefits through COMIDA and RG&E is providing $870,000 in grants for electric and gas infrastructure.

American Packaging is investing nearly $170 million in the project. The company makes flexible packaging products, serving a wide range of markets.

The new plant is expected to be operational by December.
